Alex Gorsky On Career Development

Alex Gorsky, Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, advises that when it comes to career choice be flexible, patient, receptive to ideas/learning, and importantly passionate about what you do.

In a key moment, he notes: “Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean I don’t like you…it’s about getting to the right idea.”

  • Love what you do, learn to love what you and do it well…you don’t want to be at the end of a 30-year career thinking I didn’t enjoy it that much…what a waste of opportunity
  • Having a passion, having to do something you really care about is not so much work
  • It doesn’t always come right away…it can take time
  • Always be learning…instead of being intimidated or daunted by something we have to learn, use that as an opportunity to reboot your brain
  • Be flexible…you may get an opportunity to do something (like travel) that you never imagined…
  • Take on challenges…don’t be afraid to take on the status quo
  • Work well in teams…it’s not about what I do, what an individual does, it is how do we bring the right team together? It’s not just about consensus…once in a while you argue, you debate, you challenge
  • Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean I don’t like you…it’s about getting to the right idea
